Frank Alva Buecheler founded his first production company in 1993. He had the idea of building a theater in Hamburg’s free port, opposite the tourist hotspot Landungsbrücken. Initially dismissed as crazy by many, he quickly managed to convince the decision-makers in his hometown of his plan. Buecheler himself came up with the initial design for the yellow tent theater, found investors, built up the company, and in December 1994, the Theater im Hafen opened with BUDDY – Die Buddy Holly Story. 1,650 seats, 8 performances per week, 416 shows per year. In 2000, the theater was sold to Joop van den Ende, and what was initially only licensed as a temporary facility could now be expanded structurally. Since then, THE LION KING has been performed here. The Theater im Hafen now has a prominent counterpart, the Elbphilharmonie, and another musical theater as its neighbor.
Buecheler’s theater provided significant impetus for the development of Hamburg’s HafenCity, in line with the intentions of politicians.
Since 1995, Buecheler has devoted himself intensively to his second major project, the construction and management of the Musicaltheater Bremen, initially initiated by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City. Buecheler succeeded in winning over the citizens for the public-private partnership project. In the USA, he discovered a new musical by Lesslie Bricusse and Frank Wildhorn: JEKYLL & HYDE. He acquired the rights even before Broadway followed suit, where the work celebrated its premiere in 1997. In February 1999, the curtain rose in Bremen for the European premiere of JEKYLL & HYDE. The production won numerous awards, as did the producer. After running for several years, the production was taken over by the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and then shown at the Musical Dome Cologne, which is almost a replica of the theater in the harbor. In the meantime, JEKYLL & HYDE has conquered German and European stages, and Buecheler himself staged the musical spectacularly on Germany’s largest stage for the Bad Hersfeld Festival.
From 1997 to 2004, Buecheler was also associate producer for the New York-based GTA German Theater Abroad. In picturesque locations (parking garage, church, school bus), a team of young German actors presented contemporary German drama in American translation – rewarded by success with audiences and international arts critics.
Emerging from his social commitment, Buecheler founded in 2023 in Sicily the ONE SKY academy – an art academy dedicated to peace, freedom, and progress. Located in the heart of the island, in the picturesque small town of Piazza Armerina, the project experienced an unexpectedly rapid development into CASA BLU | ONE SKY Academy + the CITTÀ BIANCA Resort ****, which also includes an amphitheater with seating for 1,500 people. 1993 gründete Frank Alva Buecheler seine erste Produktionsgesellschaft. Er hatte die Idee, im Hamburger Freihafen ein Theater zu errichten, gegenüber dem Touristen-Hotspot Landungsbrücken. Anfänglich von vielen für verrückt erklärt, vermochte er in kurzer Zeit die Entscheider in seiner Heimatstadt von seinem Plan zu überzeugen. Der erste Entwurf für das gelbe Zelttheater stammte von Buecheler selbst, er fand Investoren, baute das Unternehmen auf und so wurde im Dezember 1994 das Theater im Hafen mit BUDDY – Die Buddy Holly Story eröffnet. 1650 Plätze, 8 Vorstellungen pro Woche, 416 Shows im Jahr. Im Jahr 2000 wurde das Theater an Joop van den Ende verkauft und was zunächst nur als Provisorium konzessioniert war, konnte nun baulich erweitert werden. Seither ist hier der KÖNIG DER LÖWEN zu sehen. Das Theater im Hafen hat inzwischen ein prominentes Gegenüber bekommen, die Elbphilharmonie, und ein weiteres Musicaltheater zum Nachbarn. Wesentliche Impulse für die Entwicklung der Hamburger Hafencity sind von Buechelers Theater ausgegangen – so wie es der Intention der Politik entsprach.
Seit 1995 widmete sich Buecheler sehr intensiv seinem zweiten Großprojekt, dem Bau und der Leitung des Musicaltheaters Bremen, zunächst initiert vom Senat der Freien Hansestadt. Buecheler gelang es, die Bürgerinnen und Bürger für das Public Private Partnership Projekt zu gewinnen. In den USA entdeckte er ein neues Musical von Lesslie Bricusse und Frank Wildhorn: JEKYLL & HYDE. Er erwarb die Rechte noch bevor der Broadway folgte, wo das Werk 1997 seine Premiere feierte. Im Februar 1999 hob sich in Bremen der Vorhang für die europäische Erstaufführung von JEKYLL & HYDE. Die Produktion wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, ebenso der Produzent. Nach mehrjähriger Laufzeit wurde die Produktion in Wien vom Theater an der Wien übernommen und anschließend noch im Musical Dome Köln gezeigt, der fast ein Nachbau des Theaters im Hafen ist. Inzwischen hat JEKYLL & HYDE die deutschen und europäischen Bühnen erobert, Buecheler selber inszenierte das Musical spektakulär auf Deutschlands größter Bühne für die Bad Hersfelder Festspiele.
Von 1997 bis 2004 war Buecheler zudem Associate Producer für das New Yorker GTA German Theater Abroad. in pittoresken Orten (Parkhaus, Kirche, Schulbus) präsentierte ein Team junger deutscher Schauspieler aktuelle deutsche Dramatik in amerikanischer Übersetzung – belohnt von Erfolgen beim Publikum und den internationalen Feuilletons.
Entstanden aus seinem sozialen Engagement gründete Buecheler 2023 die ONE SKY academy – die Kunstakademie für Freiden, Freiheit und Fortschritt in Sizilien. Das im Zentrum der Insel in der pittoresken Kleinstadt Piazza Armerina lokalisierte Projekt nahm eine unvorhersehbar rasante Entwicklung zur CASA BLU | ONE SKY academy + CITTÀ BIANCA resort ****, auch ein Amphitheater mit 1500 Plätzen umfassen. Nel 1993 Frank Alva Buecheler fondò la sua prima società di produzione. Ebbe l’idea di costruire un teatro nel porto franco di Amburgo, di fronte alla Landungsbrücken, meta turistica molto frequentata. Inizialmente considerato da molti un’idea irrealizzabile, in breve tempo riuscì a convincere i decisori della sua città natale. Il primo progetto per il teatro giallo a forma di tenda fu realizzato dallo stesso Buecheler, che trovò gli investitori, fondò l’azienda e così, nel dicembre 1994, il Theater im Hafen aprì i battenti con BUDDY – Die Buddy Holly Story. 1650 posti a sedere, 8 spettacoli a settimana, 416 spettacoli all’anno. Nel 2000 il teatro fu venduto a Joop van den Ende e quello che inizialmente era stato concesso solo come provvisorio poté essere ampliato dal punto di vista strutturale. Da allora qui è possibile assistere al RE LEONE. Il Theater im Hafen ha ora un illustre vicino, l‘Elbphilharmonie, e un altro teatro musicale. Il teatro di Buecheler ha dato un impulso significativo allo sviluppo della HafenCity di Amburgo, in linea con le intenzioni della politica.
Dal 1995 Buecheler si è dedicato intensamente al suo secondo grande progetto, la costruzione e la direzione del Musicaltheater Bremen, inizialmente avviato dal Senato della Libera Città Anseatica. Buecheler è riuscito a coinvolgere i cittadini nel progetto di partenariato pubblico-privato. Negli Stati Uniti scoprì un nuovo musical di Lesslie Bricusse e Frank Wildhorn: JEKYLL & HYDE. Acquistò i diritti ancora prima che il musical arrivasse a Broadway, dove l’opera celebrò la sua prima nel 1997. Nel febbraio 1999 si alzò il sipario a Brema per la prima europea di JEKYLL & HYDE. La produzione fu insignita di numerosi premi, così come il produttore. Dopo diversi anni di repliche, la produzione è stata ripresa a Vienna dal Theater an der Wien e successivamente è stata rappresentata anche al Musical Dome Cologne, che è quasi una replica del teatro nel porto. Nel frattempo, JEKYLL & HYDE ha conquistato i palcoscenici tedeschi ed europei, e Buecheler stesso ha messo in scena il musical in modo spettacolare sul più grande palcoscenico tedesco per il Bad Hersfelder Festspiele.
Dal 1997 al 2004 Buecheler è stato anche produttore associato per il GTA German Theater Abroad di New York. In luoghi pittoreschi (parcheggio, chiesa, scuolabus) un team di giovani attori tedeschi ha presentato drammi tedeschi contemporanei tradotti in americano, riscuotendo successo presso il pubblico e la critica internazionale.
Nata dal suo impegno sociale, nel 2023 Buedheler ha fondato in Sicilia la ONE SKY academy — l’accademia d’arte per la pace, la libertà e il progresso in Sicilia. Situato nel cuore dell’isola, nella pittoresca cittadina di Piazza Armerina, il progetto ha conosciuto uno sviluppo sorprendentemente rapido, evolvendosi in CASA BLU | ONE SKY academy + CITTÀ BIANCA resort ****, che comprende anche un anfiteatro con 1.500 posti a sedere.
