Social Commitment
At the end of 2014, when the so-called wave of refugees reached Germany, Buecheler initially volunteered at a temporary refugee shelter in Berlin Mitte, helping war refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan in particular to settle in Germany. He co-founded the association FREEDOMUS – Hilfe für Flüchtlinge mitten in Berlin (Help for Refugees in the Heart of Berlin). The result of his first trips to refugee camps in the Middle East was the founding of the non-profit organization FREEARTUS – artists and refugees united for freedom in Berlin with the aim of professionalizing and focusing support for newcomers and organizing it as a collaboration on an equal footing. As a result, Buecheler and a dozen co-partners, all from the arts and culture sector, were able to assist hundreds of mostly young people in making a new start after their often horrific, inhumane flight.
When the refugee home on Große Hamburger Straße was closed as planned and the residents had to move to the outskirts of the city or to Brandenburg, they expressed their desire to keep a meeting place in the center of Berlin: However, it should not function as a social café, but rather show that the Arab newcomers were modern, cosmopolitan, cool people. Buecheler and Bachar Hassoun, who is from Syria and is now also managing director of FREEARTUS, took up this request and turned it into the LAWRENCE cultural forum in Berlin Mitte, opposite the New Synagogue with its golden dome visible from afar. The gallery, event rooms, shop, and large oriental restaurant quickly became a meeting place and venue for cultural exchange after its opening in August 2017, and are also very popular with German and international top politicians and artists.
Buecheler’s university colleague Prof. Gilbert Beronneau analyzed that the theater stage had apparently become too small for his friend, as he now stages social artworks in real-life settings.
During the pandemic, the idea arose to build on the success story of LAWRENCE and to give the skills that FREEARTUS had acquired through numerous projects in Lebanon and Syria, countless encounters, and diverse experiences throughout the Middle East a new platform. In the spring of 2023, Buecheler founded the ONE SKY academy in Sicily and accepted the invitation from the city of Piazza Armerina in the center of the island to establish the international art academy for peace, freedom, and progress in a former monastery in the historic old town. After a successful first season, however, the location proved unsuitable in the long term. At the beginning of 2027, the academy will move into attractive new premises in the CASA BLU, located on a hill on the outskirts of Piazza Armerina. At its foot, the CITTÀ BIANCA resort **** conference and vacation hotel is being built with a capacity of 20 bungalows and 180 double rooms, which will open at the beginning of 2028.

Ende 2014 – die sogenannte Flüchtlinge – Welle erreichte Deutschland – half Buecheler zunächst ehrenamtlich in einer temporären Flüchtlingsunterkunft in Berlin Mitte, insbesondere den Kriegsflüchtlingen aus Syrien, Irak, Afghanisten in Deutschland anzukommen. Er war Mitbegründer des Vereins FREEDOMUS – Hilfe für Flüchtlinge mitten in Berlin. Ergebnis seiner ersten Reisen in die Flüchtlingscamps in Middle East war die Gründung der gemeinnützigen Gesellschaft FREEARTUS – artists and refugees united for freedom in Berlin mit dem Ziel, die Unterstützung für die Newcomer zu professionalisieren, zu fokussieren und als Zusammenarbeit auf Augenhöhe zu organisieren. In der Folge konnten Buecheler und ein Dutzend Mitgesellschafter und Mitgesellschafterinnen, alle aus dem Bereich von Kunst und Kultur, Hunderten von meist jungen Menschen nach der oft entsetzlichen, unmenschlichen Flucht beim Neustart zur Seite stehen.
Als das Flüchtlingsheim in der Großen Hamburger Straße plangemäß geschlossen wurde, die Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner an den Stadtrand oder nach Brandenburg umziehen mussten, formulierten sie den Wunsch, einen Treffpunkt im Zentrum Berlins zu behalten: Er solle aber wie ein Sozialcafé wirken, sondern zeigen, dass die arabischen Newcomer moderne, weltoffene, coole Menschen seien. Buecheler und der aus Syrien stammmende Bachar Hassoun, inzwischen ebenfalls Geschäftsführer von FREEARTUS, griffen den Wunsch auf und machten daraus das Kulturforum LAWRENCE in Berlin Mitte, gegenüber der Neuen Synagoge mit ihrer weithin sichtbaren goldenen Kuppel. Galerie, Veranstaltungsräume, Shop und großes orientalisches Restaurant wurden schnell nach der Eröffnung im August 2017 zum Treffpunkt und Ort kulturellen Austauschs, sehr beliebt auch bei deutschen sowie internationalen Spitzenpolitikern und Künstlern.
Buechelers Hochschulkollege Prof. Gilbert Beronneau analysierte, dass seinem Freund die Theaterbühne offenbar zu klein geworden sei, da er jetzt soziale Kunstwerke im realen Umfeld in Szene setzen würde.
Während der Pandemie entstand die Idee, die Erfolgsgeschichte des LAWRENCE zu aufzugreifen und den Kompetenzen, die FREEARTUS auch mit zahlreichen Projekten im Libanon und Syrien, in ungezählten Begegnungen und vielfältigen Erfahrungen in ganz Middle East erworben hatte, eine weitere, neue Plattform zu geben. So gründete Buecheler im Frühjahr 2023 die ONE SKY academy auf Sizilien und folgte der Einladung der Stadt Piazza Armerina im Zentrum der Insel, die internationale Kunstakademie für Frieden, Freiheit und Fortschritt in einem ehemaligen Kloster in der historischen Altstadt aufzunehmen. Nach einer erfolgreichen ersten Saison erwies sich der Standort aber auf Dauer als ungeeignet. Anfang 2027 wird die Akademie attraktive neue Räumlichkeiten in der CASA BLU beziehen, am Stadtrand von Piazza Armerina auf einer Anhöhe gelegen – ihr zu Füssen entsteht das Tagungs- und Ferienhotel CITTÀ BIANCA resort **** mit einer Kapazität von 20 Bungalows und 180 Doppelzimmern, das Anfang 2028 seinen Betrieb aufnehmen wird.
Impegno Sociale
Alla fine del 2014, quando la cosiddetta ondata di rifugiati raggiunse la Germania, Buecheler iniziò a prestare servizio come volontario in un centro di accoglienza temporaneo per rifugiati a Berlino Mitte, aiutando in particolare i rifugiati di guerra provenienti da Siria, Iraq e Afghanistan ad ambientarsi in Germania. Fu cofondatore dell’associazione FREEDOMUS – Hilfe für Flüchtlinge mitten in Berlin (Aiuto ai rifugiati nel centro di Berlino).
Il risultato dei suoi primi viaggi nei campi profughi in Medio Oriente è stata la fondazione dell’associazione senza scopo di lucro FREEARTUS – artists and refugees united for freedom a Berlino, con l’obiettivo di professionalizzare e focalizzare il sostegno ai nuovi arrivati e di organizzarlo come una collaborazione alla pari. Di conseguenza, Buecheler e una dozzina di soci, tutti provenienti dal settore dell’arte e della cultura, hanno potuto assistere centinaia di persone, per lo più giovani, a ricominciare dopo la fuga spesso terribile e disumana.
Quando il centro di accoglienza per rifugiati nella Große Hamburger Straße è stato chiuso come previsto e i residenti hanno dovuto trasferirsi alla periferia della città o nel Brandeburgo, hanno espresso il desiderio di mantenere un punto d’incontro nel centro di Berlino: non doveva però funzionare come un caffè sociale, ma mostrare che i nuovi arrivati arabi erano persone moderne, cosmopolite e alla moda. Buecheler e Bachar Hassoun, originario della Siria e ora anche amministratore delegato di FREEARTUS, hanno accolto il desiderio e lo hanno trasformato nel forum culturale LAWRENCE a Berlino Mitte, di fronte alla Nuova Sinagoga con la sua cupola dorata visibile da lontano. La galleria, le sale per eventi, il negozio e il grande ristorante orientale sono diventati rapidamente, dopo l’inaugurazione nell’agosto 2017, un punto d’incontro e un luogo di scambio culturale, molto apprezzato anche dai politici e dagli artisti di spicco tedeschi e internazionali.
Il collega universitario di Buecheler, il Prof. Gilbert Beronneau, ha osservato che il palcoscenico teatrale era evidentemente diventato troppo piccolo per il suo amico, che ora mette in scena opere d’arte sociali in contesti reali.
Durante la pandemia è nata l’idea di riprendere la storia di successo di LAWRENCE e di dare una nuova piattaforma alle competenze che FREEARTUS aveva acquisito anche con numerosi progetti in Libano e Siria, in innumerevoli incontri e diverse esperienze in tutto il Medio Oriente. Così, nella primavera del 2023, Buecheler ha fondato la ONE SKY academy in Sicilia e ha accettato l’invito della città di Piazza Armerina, nel centro dell’isola, ad ospitare l’accademia internazionale d’arte per la pace, la libertà e il progresso in un ex convento nel centro storico. Dopo una prima stagione di successo, tuttavia, la sede si è rivelata inadatta a lungo termine. All’inizio del 2027 l’accademia si trasferirà in nuovi e attraenti locali nella CASA BLU, situata su una collina alla periferia di Piazza Armerina. Ai suoi piedi sorgerà l’hotel per congressi e vacanze CITTÀ BIANCA resort ****, con una capacità di 20 bungalow e 180 camere doppie, che entrerà in funzione all’inizio del 2028.
